The 4L's

Four 2-months old puppies were dumped at Second Chance two days ago! The puppies were placed inside a box with a "SORRY" note. :( Although we understand that everyone has their own difficult circumstances, we hope that these kind of incidents do not happen. It is extremely unfair to the puppies.

There were three male puppies and one female. Mrs Lai has named them..

Lucy
Lennon
Louis
Lucas and Louis (left and right respectively)

An 'emo' picture of Lennon
Another picture of Louis..

They were full of fleas when Second Chance first found them. Thankfully, we had Elaine and her boyfriend at the shelter to help out. They spent two hours cleaning and feeding the dogs! Anyways, Second Chance would also like to thank them for their donation as stated below:

1 bag of rice (10kg),
- 2 bags of dog kibbles ( 8kg each), and
- 2 bags of puppy kibbles (1.5kg each)

Thank you so much for your double help, Elaine and boyfriend!!!

And on a separate note, whoever interested in adopting any of the three charming dudes and one beautiful dudette, DO contact Second Chance! :)

Ready for Love Again

Meet Vincent.

Madam Ho rescued him from Bt 9 Jalan Cheras about one month ago. At that time, he smelled pretty bad and was suffering injuries to his jaw, ears, under the eye and his paws had holes as well. To make matters worse, maggots were found in his wounds.

Excuse me for showing the gory pictures.. You may proceed to the AFTER pictures if sights of cuts and wounds make you go weak in the leg.

Wound below his eye.

Cuts on his paws.

But fast forward to today and you will find that Vincent has almost fully recovered. Vincent is about one or two years old and from the pictures, it is pretty obvious that he is a Shih Tzu. All he needs now is a home and loving adopters to fill his life.

Currently, he is being fostered by Mrs Lai. He is particularly close with Mrs Lai's Golden Retriever, Kuzco. Look at all that PDA! (PDA stands for Public Display of Affection)

According to Mrs Lai, despite his small size, he chases Kuzco around the house. Anyone can see how well Vincent gets along with other dogs.

Vincent is an adorable and friendly boy, although he can get very playful at times.

He loves his bed and sleeps like an angel.

On a separate note, Vincent has also been vaccinated and neutered. All he really needs now is a new home with people to love him.

So, any takers?

Opal For Adoption

This is Opal.

She is very playful and loves moving about. Opal doesnt look like the typical dog. She has a little of that terrier look. And her brown hair is longer than average dogs with shades of black. It would be good if Opal can find an owner with a home that has space for her to run outside as she enjoys her exercise and play. She is friendly with humans and love crowding your feet to greet you. She also enjoys bathing. Picture below shows Opal being bathed by one of our volunteers, Mun Ee.

So.. who's up for adopting playful and frisky little Opal?

Serdang

I have been volunteering with Second Chance for at least eight months now. It started off with an adoption drive back in July last year, and weeks later, I was called by Auntie Kim to meet up with some other volunteers to start a training programme for the dogs at the shelter.

What I learnt in the weeks to come (from the training crew) was something that exceeded my expectation. The people and dogs I met, the lessons I learnt.. they were priceless. TJ, who was in charge of teaching us how to handle the dogs, taught us so much about understanding our dogs' behavior. I looked forward to each and every weekend there was training.

Anyways, this blog entry isnt entirely about the Training Crew. It is about Serdang. I picked Serdang on the first day of training and ever since then, I have only adored him more and more. And I hope someone out there, who can see the beauty of Serdang, just like how I do, will adopt him.

This is Serdang.

Serdang came to Second Chance when he was just a puppy. He suffered from parvo and distemper but despite the odds, he survived! You can see Serdang's puppy picture here.

Back to the story. The reason I picked Serdang to train was simple. He stood out from all the other dogs. Although he barked at new visitors just like the other dogs, there was a quality in him that indicated that he did things because he wanted to and not because he was following the crowd. His demeanor oozed calmness and confidence, all at the same time. I had to pick him.

Over the next few months as we did our training, (you can check out Elise's post about the training) I became more drawn towards him. He did not get easily excited as compared to the other dogs and more importantly, he seemed to know what he was doing.

The only thing that frustrated me throughout the training process was that he refused to succumb to any treats. Food is not really a big deal to this fella.

As a person who has known Serdang for almost a year, I would say that he is a very cool, calm and collected boy. He is a little more than one year old now (a young adult!) and can carry out the basic commands if given a refresher course. Bringing him for walks is never really a chore. Serdang walks leisurely and will follow your lead if you can prove that you deserve to be leader. He  has no aggression problems, very sweet with humans and can get along with most dogs.

I would adopt Serdang myself if I could. But because I cant, I sincerely hope someone out there can.. so Serdang can finally find a place to call home.

And no, this post isnt an April Fool's joke. ;)

Blooming Flower

If you are looking for a dog which is:

- intelligent
- friendly and sweet-natured
- not too big
- low maintenance

then Flower might just be the right one for you!

A few months back when Second Chance had a training programme for selected dogs, Flower came out as one of the fastest learners. You can read more about the programme here.

She is also really good with humans. She seems to think that hand-licking is the key to a human's heart - not saying her theory is wrong!

Flower would make a good family dog. She will be able to learn tricks very quickly and is very patient and tolerable with her human masters.

Trust me, I witnessed Flower during her training sessions!

Make you go awwwww…

The pictures say it all… this new rescued pup just melt our hearts away with his maximum cuteness.. For a pup, he is pretty independent too.. Usually when a puppy is left alone, they will be crying non-stop for attention. But this tough boy here doesn’t seemed mind to be left alone.

Pups in need of home : Winnie and Vincci

Winnie and Vincci were one month old when they were found in the middle of a road in Cheras. A passerby took pity and rescued them when their mother was run over by a car. They were cared for by him in his apartment for few nights before sending to our shelter. Aren’t their floppy ears just adorable? And what about their soulful eyes, pleading you to take them home with you… Please do write to us if you like to adopt them.
